Some Useful Sites for Numeracy and Literacy
I’ve just posted to the forum of the online course I’m doing at the moment. I thought I might share the post here too!
1. http://resources.oswego.org/games/
This site can be used to create your own mini interactive maths games. But I spent some time exploring the premade games and they are excellent. Most can be customised to suit different abilities and the number of questions and timing can also be varied. This could be very useful in one to one or small group situations.
2. http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/index.html
This site contains a large number of games. Some of these games are hosted on other websites, including BBC, and this site simply provides links to them. However, it is useful to have these games categorised and linked from one place. The games cover a huge range of maths topics and concepts and could be used with children of various abilities.
3. http://www.iboard.co.uk/activities/years/4-7/subject/maths
This website is the best of those I have chosen. The games are nicely designed, run very quickly and can be used with children of a great range of abilities. As well as games they also have interactive resources that can be used to demonstrate various topics and methods.
4. http://www.csfsoftware.co.uk/products.htm
This site could be particularly useful if you have internet connectivity issues in your school. It offers software that you can download and install at home and then use without the need for an internet connection. The Countdown Numbers Game is an excellent replication of the real game and could definitely be used as a fun lesson starter. The Pairs game and Maze Creator also look very useful.
5. http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/literacy/index.htm
This is the literacy section of the Woodlands website mentioned above. Again, a lot of the resources listed are actually from different websites but it can be useful to have them collated in one place. The phonics exercises could be a great way to engage younger learners.
This is the best online resource I have come across for teaching reading and phonics. The resources are fun and engaging for the young learner and cover a huge range of reading activities. The online books are well presented and the site runs ver smoothly. This is a resource that could easily be used in a whole class, small group or one to one session.
